Formerly known as the Athens Classic Marathon they have changed name in recent years to reflect the marathons legendary status. Athens is the birthplace of the Marathon race 2500+ years ago. A legendary course it is a must for every marathon runner. The route is hilly and challenging - starts near the sea at marathon village and ends in the spectacular Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens. Panathinaikos Stadium was built entirely in white marble for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The marble stadium is located on the same spot where remains of an ancient stadium used for the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece were excavated.
The marathon start is staggered from 9h00 until 09h42. You have 8 hours to finish the race. The average temperatures for Athens early November are around 14 - 18°C (57 – 64.4°F). Taking place, the day before there is also a 10km.
