Formerly known as the Athens Classic Marathon they have changed name in recent years to reflect the marathons legendary status. The village of Marathon is the birthplace of all marathons, and dates back 2500+ years. This legendary course it is a must for every marathon runner. The route is hilly and challenging and starts near the sea at the village of Marathon and ends in the spectacular Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium was built entirely from white marble for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It stands on the site of an ancient stadium, where the remains of an earlier structure—previously used for athletic events in ancient Greece—were subsequently excavated and restored.
